Gulliver Puppet Theater

It was founded on October 1st, 1952, with Ion Focșăneanu as its first director. With a band of amateur puppeteers, the first shows took place on improvised stages with texts translated from Russian, the heroes being bears and bunnies.

Among the first actors were: Puiu Dumitru, Mioara Mocanu, Enache Anghel, Puiu Andronache, Alexandra Doicu, Rodica Vasiliu and Teodora Stoicovici. Gradually, plays inspired by the stories of the Brothers Grimm, HC Andersen, Ion Creangă or Petre Ispirescu took their place in the theater's repertoire. At this theater, the characters were animated by directors and script writers of national prestige, among which we mention Eugen Tudoran, Cristian Pepino or Mircea Nicolau.

Between 1970-1979, under the direction of Traian Ghițescu-Ciurea and Mircea Nicolau, the puppet theater from Galaţi left the local borders, being invited to genre festivals in Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Denmark where it won numerous awards. A remarkable success was achieved in 1982 at the International Puppet and Marionettes Theater Festival in Zagreb, where, with the play Sânziana and Pepelea presented in Esperanto, the puppet theater won all possible awards.

After 1990, the Puppet Theater of Galați organized annually, the "Gulliver" Festival, a national prestige event, in which all the troops from the country participate, the city being recognized as a "capital of the Romanian puppeteers".

From the beginning of its activity until now, with 5-6 premieres per season, the theater has presented over 200 titles inspired by Romanian and universal literature.

"Fani Tardini" Dramatic Theater

On September 1, 1955, the State Theater was established, since 1973 being called the Dramatic Theater, and in 2000 the Dramatic Theater "Fani Tardini". At the beginning, the theater team consisted of 2 directors and 24 actors and in a year, the renovated building of the "VA Urechia" Society was made available to it, where it still operates. The first performances on the stage of the Galaţi theater took place in 1956, until now staging over 200 shows, with a frequency of 5-6 premieres per season.

On the triangular pediment of the theater building there is another high-relief made between 1956-1957 by the sculptor Mac Constantinescu in collaboration with Andrei Ostap, Nestor Culluri and Ion Tureastca. The subject of the composition is inspired by popular myths, being a combination between the elements of local folklore and those of ancient origin. The decoration is completed by 14 metopes in relief, representing heraldic figures, and three parapet wall copings.

From its beginning, the Dramatic Theater from Galați benefited from competent management, provided in turn by the directors: Ștefan Iordănescu, Crin Teodorescu, Ion Bologa, Victorița Dinu, Ovidiu Georgescu, Ion Maximilian, Dumitru Pâslaru, Dan Plăeșu, Mihai Mihail, Vlad Vasiliu, Adrian Lupu, prestigious name of the culture and stage of Galaţi, outstanding personalities of the Romanian theater. The first major actors of the theater made their debut and took their first steps on stage in Galați: Gina Patrichi, Ștefan Bănică, Ileana Cernat, Florin Cercel, Emil Hossu sa

We must not forget the names of some directors who staged shows for the theater in Galați: Valeriu Moisescu, Radu Penciulescu, Vlad Mugur, Dinu Cernescu, personalities who have made special contributions in the art of Romanian performance in the last four decades.

Since 1976, on the initiative of the director Mihai Mihail, the first comedy festival in Romania was organized, under the name of ”Colloquium for the art of comedy”. Although steps have been taken to turn the national festival into an international event or to replace and fine the show itself with related forms and formulas, in the consciousness of the people of Galaţi it remained as a "royal of comedy". It should be mentioned that, in the various editions of the festival, all the important theaters in Romania, with the most prestigious actors of the country, presented performances on the stage in Galaţi.

A concrete proof that the theater in Galați had comedy actors of a certain national value, are the personal awards obtained for performance by: Mitică Iancu, Gheorghe V. Gheorghe, Mihai Mihail, Eugen Popescu Cosmin, Liliana Lupan, Sanda Maria Ulmeni, Magda Georgescu, Ioana Citta Baciu and Claudiu Stănescu.

"Nae Leonard" Musical Theater

Galați's musical vocation has its roots over a century and a half ago, when here, on the banks of the Danube, intertwined their material and spiritual existence, together with the locals, a number of ethnic communities from all over Europe.

Animators and bands of each of these ethno-cultural identities have tried tried to bring to the ramp of this generous audience pages of universal and national dramatic and musical creation.

After World War II, in the town where Nae Leonard was born and where Ivanovich had composed the waltz "Waves of the Danube" and performed in the Public Garden, a group of talented and passionate music lovers gathered around them disciples with skill and will to make music truly flourish in their city.

The experience and grace of some older animators and performers, specialized teachers such as: Ion Antoniu, Spiru Xantopol, A.Gheorghiu, G.Nebunelli, Ion Dodu or Aurel Manolache will definitely win the battle for the establishment, first of all, of a Musical Asembly (June 12 1954) then of the Galați State Symphony Orchestra (September 15, 1955) with the young Alecu Sfetcu and Ury Schmidt as conductors. The Conductor Mihail Brediceanu and violinist Ion Voicu will be the protagonists of the inaugural concert. The local creators Aurel Manolache, Pusa Niederhoffer, Cristofor Barbatti and Milu Iosipovici will attract, together with the performers Ecaterina Niculescu, Mariana Negrut, Elena Grigoriu, Alexandru Jula or Teodor Munteanu, brought to the hall over 70,000 spectators in 1955 with only two performances "Our Team" and "Point 3 ...miscelaneous".

Gradually, the collective of the Musical Ensemble of the Regional People's Council from Galați acquires a structure and an obvious tendency of professionalization. On May 15, 1956, the Operetta Theater and the Regional Estrada were founded, later the Galati Musical Theater, the "Nae Leonard" Musical Theater today.

During all these years, generations of performers have been formed on the Galaţi stage, lyricist who have brought the fame of this institution throughout the country and beyond its borders. So far, in the lights of the Galaţi scene, the curtain has been raised more than 250 times. There are almost no works of great popularity from the universal lyrical art that have not been presented in several variants, along with original creations of great interest. The listing of only a few titles cannot be significant for the almost half-century work of the team of this institution. We will mention, however, that no less than 40 operettas, 42 operettas, 10 musicals, 20 ballets, 15 musical performances for children and over 50 stage and magazine performances were included in the theater's portfolio during this time.

Countless were the prestigious guests and collaborators of the theater, who brought, with their specific evolution in the context of the theatre's activity, each time, a plus of experience, of mastery, consolidating and stimulating the successes and performances of the lyrical artists from Galati.

All this would not have been possible without the contribution of an enthusiastic and talented team, led and professionally guided by masters such as conductors Viorel Dobos and Silviu Zavulovici, Ury Schmidt, Gabor Kiss, Alecu Sfetcu, Dimitrie Macarie, Cristofor Barbatty, directors Paul Mihail Ionescu, Panait Victor Cotescu, Jean Ranzescu, Hero Lupescu, Alexandru Ionescu-Arbore, the choreographer Trixy Checais and many others. Among the famous soloists, representative for the Romanian vocal art, who started their career on the Galaţi stage, we mention Vasile Martinoiu, Nicolae Urdareanu, Dan Zancu, Lucia Tibuleac, Lucia Cicoara Dragan, Liliana Nichiteanu.

From its beginning until now, the theater has toured abroad in the recent years, in Italy with "Tosca", "Madama Butterfly", "Rigoletto", "Aida" and the musical "Hello Dolly", in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland with "Traviata", "Nabucco", in Linz in Austria with entertaining musical performances.

In May 2002, a special event took place, the open-air presentation of the opera "Nabucco" by G. Verdi, an event heavily publicized and broadcast on the Internet, which was a real success both locally and nationally. The success of this project led the theater management to organize in the second edition of the International Festival "Leonard" in 2005, an outdoor performance with the opera "Aida" by G.Verdi.

Since 2004, our institution has been organizing the "Leonard" International Music Festival with a large participation of musicians and music groups from Europe and other countries of the world. As part of the program for affirming young talents, we organized annually, given the close relations with the Bel Canto studio in Vienna, led by the distinguished professor Toma Popescu, international master's courses for young singers.
